About this place
Examine the European montane-alpine treeline ecotone, cushion-plant thermal microclimates, and nocturnal ungulate guild partitioning.
For kids: Climb to sunny mountain meadows where round flower cushions trap their own cosy heat and nimble hoofed climbers share secret glades!

What to look for
- Sun-warmed rock & cushion-plant crag — Silene acaulis boundary-layer dome & cloven-hoof grip. Locate the south-facing rock outcrop colonized by heat-trapping alpine cushion plants
- Wind-flagged krummholz treeline — Growing-season ~6.4 °C isotherm treeline. Centre the stunted krummholz conifer ecotone governed by root-zone soil temperature
- Montane mineral lick & stag glade — Cervus elaphus & Ovis gmelini mineral lick. Scan the volcanic mineral-seep glade visited nocturnally by red deer, mouflons, and wild boar

Ask together: Why do mountain flowers high on windy peaks grow in tight, low round cushions instead of tall, floppy stems like garden sunflowers?
Field quiz
Kids' question: How do low, round cushion plants survive chilly winds high up on European mountains?
- Packed stems block the wind and trap sunbeams like a warm mini-greenhouse
- They pull up their roots and walk downhill every evening
- Mountain goats knit tiny woollen hats for each flower
Answer
Packed stems block the wind and trap sunbeams like a warm mini-greenhouse
Adults' question: According to Körner's global synthesis, what primary physiological constraint sets the upper elevation limit of upright trees at the alpine timberline?
- Thermal limitation of meristematic cell division and xylogenesis below ~6.4 °C growing-season mean rather than lack of photosynthesis
- Complete absence of carbon dioxide molecules above two thousand metres
- Excessive soil overheating boiling fine root hairs in midsummer
- Total inability of conifer needles to survive winter frost
Answer
Thermal limitation of meristematic cell division and xylogenesis below ~6.4 °C growing-season mean rather than lack of photosynthesis

See it live: Live check: European Montane Glade Red Deer, Mouflon & Boar Cam
- By day
- Eurasian jays, hawfinches, blackbirds, red squirrels, roe deer & mouflon ewes Located in Hungary's highest volcanic mountain range (Kékes massif), daytime glade traffic features Garrulus glandarius acorn caching and vigilant Capreolus.
- By night
- Antlered red deer stags, spiral-horned mouflon rams, wild boar sounders, foxes & badgers Nocturnal monitoring reveals clear interspecific dominance hierarchies at shared mountain clearings: mature Cervus stags displace Ovis gmelini and Sus scrofa sounders.
