About this place
Examine Tadarida brasiliensis helical emergence vortices, sonar jamming avoidance, and high-altitude moth predation.
For kids: Watch a swirling sunset tornado of desert bats tune their voice pitches so nobody bumps in the dark!

What to look for
- Limestone cave vortex mouth — Counterclockwise helical emergence. Centre the karst sinkhole opening where dense emergence columns form
- Chihuahuan lechuguilla & agave slope — Agave lechuguilla xeric scrub. Locate the limestone desert scrub sheltering nocturnal insects and ringtails
- High-altitude moth skyway — Tail-wind supersonic-record horizontal flight. Scan the upper boundary layer where free-tailed bats ride winds above 1,000 m

Ask together: Imagine trying to hear your own echo in a crowded gym—how does changing your voice pitch solve that puzzle for bats?
Field quiz
Kids' question: Which animal holds the world speed record for level powered flight (without diving)?
- The Brazilian free-tailed bat!
- A waddling emperor penguin
- A floating monarch butterfly
Answer
The Brazilian free-tailed bat!
Adults' question: How do thousands of emerging Brazilian free-tailed bats resolve acoustic interference inside dense cave columns?
- Jamming Avoidance Response shifting terminal call frequencies away from neighbours
- Switching off ears completely until sunrise
- Using underwater electroreception in desert air
- Flying backward in single file five metres apart

- By day
- Cave swallows darting in & out of the limestone arch, rock wrens, & mule deer Daytime thermal gradients keep inner maternity chambers warm and humid while cave swallows forage across desert canyons.
- By night
- Swirling dusk columns of Brazilian free-tailed bats & dawn sky-dive return At dawn, bats drop vertically from hundred-metre altitudes at high speed, fluttering membranes audibly as they brake into the cave mouth.
